The area of GEOPARK "Sachsens Mitte" has been a recreational but also an educational area for centuries. The famous geologist Bernhard von Cotta recognized the high geoscientific importance of the region in the 19th century and wrote "Tharandt and its surroundings" (1834)
and "Geognostic hikes - Tharandt" (1836). This laid the foundation for a diverse exploration of today's GEOPARK area. The GEOPARK "Sachsens Mitte" works closely with the local research institutions and is a mediator between science and the population.
